NEW EXETER WARTIME BOOK
ONE MAN’S WAR IN EXETER
The photos of ken Jackson
The book contains 235 unique archive photos of which the majority have never been seen before. The photos by Ken Jackson cover a time when the city was pulling itself out of the effects of war and a period when few photos were taken. The book includes fascinating memoirs of Ken’s time in Exeter with vivid descriptions of how the city looked and the effect on the citizens.
Covering the years 1944 to 1946 the images relate to VE Day, VJ Day and the huge Victory Parade of 1946. The rare images depict the huge celebrations marking the end of World War II, blitzed streets, Victory tea parties, dancing in the streets, tanks coming up Queen Street, the staging of the Winston
Churchill’s speech and more.
The photographs are supported by original newspaper articles from the Express & Echo that give detailed accounts of Exeter’s major campaign to raise money for the war effort.
